Northwood is a sought-after suburb, on the edge of the Green Belt, in the London Borough of Hillingdon, just 10 miles (16km) north west of central London with many locations offering views over open countryside. It is the home to Northwood Headquarters, which is the location of the British Armed Forces Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) for planning and controlling overseas military operations.
The name Northwood historically refers to the fact that the town is located in the 'north wood' of the area known as Ruislip. A portion of Northwood has been put under a place of special interest restriction, as the area, including the old High Street, Chester Road and Hallowell Road has many Victorian houses and the roads form a triangular shape.
The suburb is characterised by numerous small restaurants and cafes, public houses, and a handful of boutique-style clothing stores. The area boasts golf, cricket and rugby clubs and a variety of places of worship. The area offers lovely walks through the grounds of Moor Park, Copse Wood, Park Woods and the Green Belt beyond.
The area of Northwood is highly favoured for its excellent schooling both private and state and includes St Johns, St Martins, St Helens, Merchant Taylors, Eastbury Farm Primary School, Northwood School, Hillside School and London School of Theology.
How to get here
By road: There are three motorways serving the local area - the M1, M25 and M40 are all within a 10-15 minute drive.
By rail: Northwood has a station on the Underground's Metropolitan Line giving easy access to central London.
